just a few things that made it home from the market…

Cauliflower | Collard Greens | Tomatoes | Onions | Thomcord Grapes | Green Peppers | Kale

I went shopping with a post-birthday, champagne headache yesterday.  With a full day planned, I realized, early, that my patience was in short supply and very little meandering would be allowed.  Shoulders were quickly shrugged and I was on to the next stall.

Then, I saw those Thomcord grapes.  I saw them and smiled wide.  I picked up a few.  Chatted and smiled some more.

Just as easily and quickly as I know things aren’t for me, I know when they are.  Those grapes.  Those grapes were dark and lovely.  I knew they would make me giggle as they burst with all kinds of memories and a bit of longing.

One of the things that I love about going to the market is that I get a chance to be excited about simple things without being dismissive of the emotions, as if they have to be or do something more to be deserving of joy.  I let myself experience the pleasure I get from delighting my senses.  Things are just beautiful.  Or taste amazing.  Or make me happy.

There’s no ‘enough’ attached to the Thomcord grapes.  There are no grand plans, either.  I’ll just wash them and nibble, until they disappear.

Home From The Market | Instagram Edition

just a few things that made it home from the market…

Things have been very post-free around here for a while. (♥:Sorry.)

I’ve been to the market.  I’ve been shooting.  And I’ve not been in the mood to edit the images.  Like everyone else, I’ve been a bit of a fool for Instagram.  So, in addition to the regular dig market archive, I’ve been taking a few shots with the iphone for a bit of instant gratification and to see if/how the filters change or add to what I already see.

Thought it might be fun to put a few of them up while I get to editing a month’s worth of fruits and veggies for upcoming posts.

just a few things that made it home from the market…

Garlic | Ginger | Cilantro | Oranges | Grapefruit | Cucumbers | Kale | Tomatoesx3 | Celery | Eggplant

Yes, I quite like tomatoes.

Even as I buy mostly for soups and juicing, there are things I can’t resist.  The beautiful heirloom cherry and grape tomatoes caught my eye.  They’re still on the table.  Uh, aging.

HFTM | Growing In The Yard

just a few things that were growing in the yard…

Broccoli | Tangerines | Lemons

Spent the weekend pet-sitting.  Didn’t make it to the Hollywood Farmers Market.  Watched things grow in the backyard.  Nibbled on a few tangerines right off the tree.

just a few things that made it home from the market… ages ago

So it’s kinda been on and popping at the Farmers’ Markets here in LA.  Between challenges to the size of the Hollywood Farmers’ Market by another local business and vendors at other markets accused of selling not so local or organic as claimed, the value and authenticity of the markets and their produce has come up for debate.

Me, I’m still in.  What started earlier this year as just something to do has become something I, just, do.  Even at the CubeFarm, people would come up to me and talk about market day.  My weekly bounty would be on display in the afternoon as I watched minutes on the clock and strawberries disappear.

But, I haven’t been to Pershing Sq since the end of October.  With the Ice Rink up and my time at the CubeFarm winding down, I’ve been glued to my desk and going to Hollywood on Sundays.

I’m so happy to be able to say that I’m SuperGrateful for the time I’ve spent going to Pershing SQ this year.  It’s been such an important experience in the evolution of my relationship with food.

*One quick word about the CubeFarm. They really are a great group of people doing good work for the folks of LA Country.  So glad to have got the chance to spend more time with them this year.

HFTM | Pershing SQ – You Made Me Love You

just a few things that made it home from the market…

This week in “Yay!” is brought to you by the color Yellow and Lunch Hour Chinese Takeout {♥:No Judgement}…

Zucchini and I didn’t “meet cute” when I was a kid.  We were re-introduced this week by way of Kung Pao w/random veggies that the guy behind the counter couldn’t completely separate out.  I’m philosophically opposed to throwing away vegetables, even ones I don’t like.  {♥: Huh? Tell me lies… tell me sweet little…}  Okay.  I thought about it.  I started putting the chunks of zucchini aside and then tasted one.  It was love at first crunch.

We hooked up at Pershing the next day.  If everything goes according to fantasy, I  think it’ll be a late Summer ’11 wedding.  Or, maybe we’ll just elope and I’ll post the pictures.
